Committee Recommends Approval of Two New Law Degree Programs

(Posted on January 28, 2011)

Canada’s law societies have delegated to the Federation of Law Societies of Canada the authority to review and make recommendations with respect to new Canadian law degree programs leading to the conferral of common law degrees. The Federation has received proposals from two Canadian universities requesting approval of new law degree programs and has created a committee to study the proposals.

The committee’s report on the proposals from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, B.C., is available here.

Appendices relating to Lakehead University’s proposal are here and those relating to the Thompson Rivers University proposal are here.

The Council of the Federation is in the process of deciding whether to adopt the recommendations and submit them to the law societies which have the ultimate authority to recognize Canadian law degrees conferred upon individuals seeking admission to law society bar admission programs.
